7 Tips to Stand Out on Your Work Team

By Jodi Wiff

7 tips to stand out on your work team in good and tough economic times. Whether you are a tenured employee, or a recent hire you have options of how to stand out on your team. Your motivation may be different today but striving to be a standout may just end up serving you very well.

1. Be committed, take actions that have you be an 'over achiever' - it may be very rewarding in tough economic times. It can also be that extra internal push that you find rewarding.

2. Think beyond your own needs - this is a time when it not just about the individual but the bigger picture. So what is personal for you team, boss and company.

3. Deliver with consistent results.

4. Ask what you can do 'more of' - 'less of', be proactive in your own adjustment. This makes performance reviews less surprising, and possibly more rewarding.

5. Be informed - know your department objectives, and ask where the team is at in achieving its targets.

6. Assess what is missing from your team; and stop waiting for the boss to handle all gaps.

7. Avoid the negative conversations that take place, don't get sucked into a 'whine party'. Today the opportunity to become a standout may not be due to motivation for a promotion, but rather to avoid a lay off. The adjustment in your behavior will serve you well in good times or tough time. Remember it is a choice of a behavior that can have a positive lasting impact on your career and your personal focus.
