Top Tips For Setting Positive Rather Than Negative Goals

By Angus MacLennan

Goals are vital if you run your own business. Do you have Positive or Negative Goals?

Goals are things we focus on and give energy to. Take a minute to think through the following questions before you read on:
  1. What in your life or business do you think about the most?
  2. Are you primarily focused on the negative stuff going on in your life or business now?
  3. Do you keep thinking about the bad things that happened in your life or business in the past?
  4. Are you giving more energy and time to the things you don't want or don't like?
If you are focusing on the negative stuff then you have negative goals and you need to re-assess your goals and get focused on the positive outcomes. Some basic tips to refocus on the right goals:
  1. Define the Problem It is a fact that we get what we focus on in life. If you focus on the pain, suffering or problems you have manifested now, or in the past, then you will get more of the same. In business this means that if you focus on the negatives you get more of them. Take some time to think about the results you are getting now and why you are getting them. Be honest with yourself and get clear on what you are focusing on.
  2. Determine the Solution Focus on the things you want for yourself and your business. What do you really want for yourself, your business, staff and your family now and in the future? Write those new positive goals down.
  3. Implement the Solution The trick is not to give the negative stuff any more attention then it takes to learn from it and move on. If you don't learn from the negative stuff you are doomed to repeat it until you have the learning's - so don't ignore it. Think about it, figure out what you need to learn, take on board the learning and move on. Move on or you will keep getting the negative outcomes.
Remember to learn from the negative things but focus your energy on the positive outcomes. Focus on the things you want. Visualise them, write them down, say them out loud and think about them every day. Get accountable to yourself and find someone to hold you accountable.Take action! Today!
