Careers: the difficult conversion frameworks

By Céline Tridon

Bookmark and Share

Career change can not be improvised. Instead, it is usually a long and difficult project. This is underlined by a study published July 28, 2010 by the Association for the use of frames (Apec).

If, even in times of crisis, executives are considering a new career, they are aware that it is preparing. The first essential step is the most frequently cited skills assessment. The approach is essentially voluntary, none of the executives interviewed for the survey had changed his job under duress.

However, companies want is to secure their recruitment and become more cautious to hire people without experience on the job. Therefore: it is now virtually impossible for a framework to achieve what recruitment professionals call the "diagonal", that is to say change both business and enterprise. The executives who opted for external mobility have mostly followed a break or a long career break (unemployment, parental leave ...). But they face a problem: cloning Profiles recruiters, which limits the opportunities.

However, some profiles are more successful than others: business, consultants and communicators who benefit from cross-cutting skills, or even a few engineers capable of managing projects. Similarly, SMEs are often more open to atypical careers because they have more difficulty recruiting. Faced with such obstacles, the Apec calls for a change of career in-house. It requires less effort for managers as they have direct access to recruiters and their future managers. Moreover, they can more easily go back in case of failure. Finally, the internal mobility is also a way for companies to retain their employees.

Why Do People Leave Their Job?

Experience- Based Retention

- Is it because of money?
- Benefits?
- The fact they believe there are no real opportunities for them at the company?

While many might argue about which of the above has more impact on whether or not a person decides to jump ship, attempting to identify the main overall culprit is probably the least productive approach to increasing retention. Why? Because while studies may show that one factor carries more weight than another, those same studies also show that all of the factors have the ability to influence people to some degree. So that means by focusing solely on the main culprit - whatever it might be - your retention plan is only as good as the number of people in your company who are primarily affected by that factor. Which means that it's nowhere close to being 100% effective.

People and Situations

Are you going to retain every person you hire? Of course not. The key is to retain those people you want to retain, those employees who make a difference and contribute a tremendous amount to the company in numerous ways. And in order to retain those superstar employees, you have to consider what kind of experience you're providing to them. Life is nothing more than a series of experiences, and people respond to them in a rather predictable fashion. They strive to avoid negative experiences, and they tend to gravitate toward positive ones. That rule certainly applies to people. After all, people provide an experience, don't they? I'm sure you could identify people in your life who provide negatives experiences and people who provide positive ones.

Which ones do you try to avoid?

The same holds true for an employment situation. If people aren't receiving a positive experience in their job, they're going to try to find a new one. The challenge is to ensure that they're receiving that positive experience. However, there are two aspects of this challenge to keep in mind: Experiences are very person-specific. In other words, what one person believes is a positive experience might not be the case for another person. Employees are not apt to come right out and tell you what constitutes a positive experience for them. Unless you have a very outgoing and highly communicative person on your team, you'll have to gather that information yourself.

Productivity and Profitability

As you might imagine, there are many different components to an experience, especially an employment experience. The good news is that there are ways to not only account for all of them, but also to ensure that you're addressing them in a way that will create positive experiences with your team and increase retention. In future issues, we're going to identify and discuss these different components, how they affect the overall employment experience and why, and how your understanding of them can help you to maximize the productivity - not to mention the profitability of your team.

Oil Rig Jobs - The Most Important Things You Need To Know

by Graham Lavery

Oil rig jobs may sound like tough soliciting jobs, but there are advantages provided for the employees that are not to be neglected. When on the rig, you get to live in a room that can be easily taken as a luxurious hotel room, while other expenses, like food or laundry, are supported by your employer.

There are many jobs that you can take on if you decide for such a career. You can be a driller, a derrickman, a shakerhand or a mudman. Other positions are those as a toolpusher, a floorman or a motorman. Jobs as assistant driller, crane operator, roustabouts, electrician or storekeeper are to be found on an oil rig. These employers also need people for jobs as sub sea engineer, rig mechanic, rig electrician, rig welder, barge engineer, ballast controlman, up to captain, chief engineer, rig medic and safety man.

One of the best parts of working on an oil rig is that you work 14 days for 21 days off, which means that more than half an year you are on vacation.

Most oil rig jobs are in countries like Saudi Arabia, United States, United Kingdom, Canada, Russia, China, Nigeria, Mexico, Norway, Kuwait, Venezuela or United Arab Emirates.

Jobs like roughnecks are paid about $300 a day, making for an annual salary of about $47,000.

Those that can apply for a more specialized job can earn up to $100,000 per year.

In general, salaries on an oil rig go from about $50,000 for an entry level position up to $220,000.

There are some safety measures that you will need to comply to. You will be provided with safety boots, hard hat, safety glasses and coveralls. You must keep your attention alert and you may be required to take night shifts. There are certain places where you can smoke and you must take off your equipment when you go eat. Another rule is to keep a good relation with your co-workers.

You must watch out for the color codes on the lifting equipment. These will indicate you that the equipment was tested as safe on the last check.

Weapons of any kind are forbidden on an oil rig. You cannot bring knives, lighters or matches as well as any alcohol or drugs.

You must also know that when you work on an offshore rig, you must remove the batteries from the electrical equipment in your luggage. Also, you are not allowed to carry your cell phone on the helicopter.

Not every job on an oil rig is about hard physical labor. There are positions for the catering section or the medical section. For instance, doctors are expected to follow these rules. They may come in contact with all kinds of diseases while working on an oil rig. As the workers are usually brought from different parts of the world, they may not be able to speak the doctor's language, so it is expected that the medical crew knows more than one foreign language so they can communicate with the patient. This type of job also includes night shifts. Their job description includes maintenance of the emergency supplies, verifying the water supplies, inspecting the food and conducting first aid seminars for the people on the oil rig.

5 Essential Tips For Fresh Graduate Job Seekers

by Peter Foo

Bookmark and Share

Every new graduate coming out of college should focus on the career building, thereafter. This is a process, which involves great efforts and hard work and it starts from seeking a job.

Here is how one can do it systematically.

- Resume Building

Start with your name and address in clear, bold format. Add your qualifications, right from the school education, in a systematic manner. While doing this all, fresh job seekers should highlight any special training received in college, even for non-circular activities or towards military training.

Mention your experience in a separate paragraph or format. This should include any formal or informal training received after finishing the college. This can form the first part of experience for all fresh graduates.

- Post Your Resume

There are several websites, which cater to the aspirations of new job seekers. Some of these sites also assist in making your resume in a professional way. Taking their help always helps. Although there can be many sites offering jobs globally, it is better to visit and join those sites that provide local jobs for the candidates in their area. Hence, all those wanting to find a job in Malaysia can visit some of the sites listed below.

jobo3.com.....
jobstreet.com
jobdb.com

While there, can be many sites based at Malaysia, which offer such services, It is better to visit and join all of them and post your resume there. However, among the three sites mentioned above, www.jobo3.com can give the results sooner than expected.

- Prepare for the initial test

Some employees have a procedure of eliminating the candidates in the initial round, by calling them for a test. The short listed candidates are then asked to attend the interview. This test is, most of the times, simple to know your aptitude and strengths, which you must have highlighted in your resume.

However, be serious to take this test, because no seriousness shown at any stage can prove harmful to you and your prospects. Prepare yourself for this test well in advance as the notice for it is sent a week or two before the test is scheduled. All fresh graduates need to be confident all along.

- Attend The Interview With Confidence

Once you are through the test, next big step is the interview itself. Be sure that you are your best on the interview day, both physically and mentally. All job seekers must remember to face the interviewer with self-confidence. This results in the exercise half done, successfully.

- Follow Up With Agency or Website to Know Your Status

Follow up with the website through whom the interview was arranged, like www.jobo3.com as they have been helping you until this point, all along.

We wish, fresh graduate job seekers, all the best to start their career by following the tips given above, systematically. However, there are many steps to be taken for meeting the final goal of all fresh graduate job seekers. We will discuss about these in coming articles.

Technology adds a new dimension to learning

The use and misuse of new technology is a common basis of case studies at business schools around the globe. But how are the schools themselves using technological innovations to educate the next generation of corporate leaders?

With five campuses in Boston, San Francisco, London, Dubai and Shanghai, Hult International Business School faces a constant battle to sustain a worldwide MBA community. It is aiming to tackle the challenge by creating its own TV network, HultTV, which will allow students and alumni to watch professors and students debate live or catch speakers presenting on new trends and developments on a dedicated channel. Once up and running, the channel will provide a centralised knowledge management system which will remain open to graduates throughout their working lives.

Warwick Business School has addressed a similar problem by introducing wbsLive, a virtual learning environment which allows distance-learning MBAs to interact with other students and academics as if they were in the same classroom instead of on different continents. The system has been so well received it is now also being used as the basis of an interactive mentoring project involving alumni and current students. "Many of our current mentors are based in the UK, whereas our mentees range from Canada to India, France to Malaysia," says Tracy Lynch of Warwick's alumni relations department. "WbsLive helps to sustain the personal aspect of the mentor/mentee relationship."

Other major schools have used the communications revolution to make lectures, seminars and case studies accessible through such platforms as the education-specific area of iTunes, iTunes U, and YouTube. This summer, Apple announced it had exceeded 300 million downloads in just over three years from iTunes U, with more than 800 universities contributing to a range of audio and video files. Eddy Cue, Apple's vice president of internet services, said: "iTunes U makes it easy for people to discover and learn with content from many of the world's top institutions." Harvard, MIT and Cambridge are among those taking part, with business schools such as Saïd Business School, University of Oxford encouraging users to don headphones to access lectures.

A pioneer in the field is HEC Paris, which began experimenting with podcasting as early as 2005 and is now an enthusiastic contributor to iTunes U. From April to June this year, the school reported more than 300,000 downloads of its materials. "Video podcasts are particularly useful in preparing students for a new course," says Valérie Gauthier, associate dean at HEC. "If a whole class has viewed a recording of frequently asked questions before the session starts, for example, the professor will not have to answer the same questions over and over again and the quality of course interaction increases."

HEC has also been at the forefront of providing technological tools to students to enable them to make the most of online libraries and networking platforms. The school was one of the first in Europe to build a relationship with Apple which allowed it to equip its MBA students with an iPod touch.

As Gauthier explains: "Millennials are accustomed to getting information when and where they want it, and this enables them to do just that."

As yet, the take-up of the next generation of communication devices such as the Kindle and the iPad has been patchy. IMD in Switzerland was one of the first to supply programme participants with an iPad, allowing them to carry around course content which previously occupied more than 1,000 pages of print. Hult is also equipping MBA students with Apple's latest gadget, preloaded with all course materials. It has also set up a team of "virtual tutors" who offer optional online coaching sessions for groups of up to 15 students at a time focusing on all aspects of the Scholarship MBA.

However, one of the most innovative uses of the iPad can be found in the Apps in Business project on the newly relaunched MBA programme at Nyenrode Business Universiteit in the Netherlands. Partnering with ICT company, Sogeti, the school gives each student an iPad and encourages them to develop their own apps which can then be road-tested in the classroom and the workplace. "The project gives students the opportunity to work with Sogeti to undertake practical research into the wider use of apps in business strategy and education," says Nyenrode's Professor Désirée van Gorp. "It will be invaluable experience, putting them way ahead of their peers in an area of huge commercial potential."

Sometimes, however, technology doesn't live up to its initial promise. When two US schools, University of Virginia – Darden and the University of Washington – Foster, ran a pilot programme equipping students with Kindle e-readers last autumn, the initial response was enthusiastic. But by the middle of the trial period, nearly a third of the Foster group and more than 80 per cent of the Darden guinea pigs had dropped out with many complaining the file management system made the storing and searching of information too difficult.

The most successful use of gadgets and new media seems to be based on a cautious approach which may be the reason why there are still more schools assessing their use than actually implementing them.

Above all, thought leaders in the sector are highly conscious that new technology can never be a substitute for good teaching and good communication. As Jennifer George, dean of the Melbourne Business School in Australia, puts it: "The teaching model devised by Plato in ancient Greece has been serving us pretty well for over 2,000 years. And while we must always move with the times, we should also remember the old adage that if something isn't broken you may not need to fix it."

A guide to sales positions

by Philip Weston

Bookmark and Share

Working in sales is a challenging yet rewarding job, but there are so many different types of sales jobs it is easy to get confused by each role. Below is a brief explanation to the most commonly advertised positions.

Sales representatives
A sales representative's role is to call customers each day, enquiring about their needs, promoting products, advising customers and taking orders. Depending on the company and the exact description of your job, you may have higher emphasis on serving existing customers offering them new products and building on the firms relationship with the consumer. However, some companies expect you to cold call and find new business which is often incentive based. Working as a sales representative is often seen as the starting point in a sales career.

Sales executive

If you take on the role of a sales executive, you are likely to have to make fewer calls per day to customers as more emphasis will be put on you finding new business and presenting demonstrations of products. Depending on the products on offer, you could find that each sale involves two or more visits to a potential customer.

Telesales
Working in telesales is similar in some ways as working as a sales representative. The role is usually office based and involves calling customers to offer products or services. It is mainly proactive in that you make the calls, but it may also involve the answering of incoming calls to answer sales enquiries. The role tends to be less technical but requires energy, enthusiasm and resilience.

Sales director

The sales director plays a pivotal role in a company and is typically responsible for the sales and marketing functions of a business. How hands on you are in the position is highly dependent on the size of the business and whilst it is likely as sales director you would be responsible for strategy, direction as well as sales and marketing initiatives, you may also be expected to play a key sales role.

Career As a Journalist

Bookmark and Share

Journalism is a great career to start with and many youngsters are lured towards this profession. It is a challenging job which requires lot of hard work and dedication but in return you enjoy ample growth and recognition in the society.Coaching allows you to stay involved in your favorite sport and pass your passion on to the next generation. While the coveted professional and college positions are up at the top of the mountain, you can start your climb in middle school, high school, city travel, AAU (Amateur Athletic Union), or prep school leagues. Typically, these coaches teach full-time and coach part-time, so if you're already a teacher or thinking about becoming a teacher, you're on your way. Why? I think it's because when we feel free to live closer to our true Creative Core, we are more fun to be around. It's best to be mindful of what's going on. When we venture into art career change, whether a seasoned veteran or a new aspirant, we can expect change in our relationships. One of my coaching clients' marriage was in trouble during a particularly confusing juncture in his career as a journalist.

Direct business administration know-how typically isn't a tool carried out of newsrooms, it's true. That's not to say all journalists are clueless about management, marketing and bottom lines - life-and-death issues in their industry.Journalists are supposed to research the news and reports to the media and press. With journalism internships you will be exposed more with the industry needs. A reporter job not only includes organizations and institutes but also cultural areas, sports, arts and entertainment etc. A journalism career duty includes writing, as it is the career in industry gives over all fields in the society.I have met many people who have found taking an evening or at home journalism course very helpful. They won't teach you all you possibly need to know but they give you a good base to start with. You can find courses like this at most local colleges that run during the year or even shorter courses for ten weeks at a time.

Patient facing positions within healthcare aren't the only areas that a trained journalist could diversify into. With hospitals and healthcare units continuously producing literature for patients and staff alike, the journalist could easily slot into a position where copious amounts of writing is required. Researchers and project managers are also vital roles when it comes to health campaigns which requires a good grasp of persuasive writing, especially when trying to get people interested in a particular idea.As a freelance journalist, contacts in the industry are essential. A people-friendly and social attitude are essential, and freelancers should always accept invitations to industry events such as book launches, for example, because you never know who you'll meet! Always be willing to go for a drink and engage with others in the industry, but be aware of the fine line between trying to sell your ideas and establishing a relationship.

What is your body language saying in the interview?

by Nikki

Bookmark and Share

Once when I was working for Johnson & Johnson, I was invited to sit in on a test marketing study where we asked average consumers about a new product we were launching.  I actually sat behind a two-way mirror for hours watching people answer questions.  It was kind of like an episode of Law and Order but without the crime…..

Anyways, before the study got started, a psychologist met with those of us who observed the consumers and gave us a crash course in body language, or non-verbal cues.  We were to use these cues as a way to either reinforce what the consumer was saying or to reveal their true feelings.  I was fascinated!  I did not know that someone could say so much about what they were thinking without using any words.  Over the years, I have done a lot of research on the subject and when I was a hiring manager, I loved to read the candidates’ non-verbal cues that would often reveal so much more than they were saying.  I now use this information to help my candidates be more successful in theinterviewing process by teaching them how to project positive body language and even how to read the body language of the interviewer.  You can literally tell what the hiring manager thinks of you if you know how to read not only what they are saying, but how they are saying it.

OK, let me just say upfront that I am not a trained psychologist.  But I have seen a lot of job seekers spend so much time concentrating on what they are going to say in the interview that they completely overlook the power of their non-verbal communication, or body language.  Experts estimate that up to 93% of face-to-face communication is nonverbal.   To be an effective interviewer, you must learn to communicate both verbally and non-verbally.  Especially if you do not have all of the qualifications of your competition, you can still perform better in the interview by learning and using the body language techniques that I teach my candidates all the time.

I know you have a lot to think about in the interview and you might be thinking that you do not need to add “body language” to the list of things you are worrying about.  But I have found it very interesting in my years of experience how powerful body language can be in the interview process.  So in an interview, your words can actually be overwhelmed by the message you are sending non-verbally.  Some job seekers never give it any thought.  They assume that if they say the right things at the right time, they will get the job.  But I have seen too many times that the “right” candidate does not get the job because the body language signals they are sending to the hiring manager are not good.  Also, I have been able to teach my candidates some basic body language strategies so that they can read what they are being told non-verbally by the hiring manager.  Let me give you the most obvious, but often overlooked, example – the handshake.

You have finally landed that interview and you eagerly approach the hiring manager with an outstretched hand.  Did you know that how your handshake is perceived says a lot about you?  Once you give a poor handshake, it can be very difficult to recover and build rapport with the hiring manager.  For example, a limp or weak handshake (also known as the "dead fish") gives the impression that you are either disinterested or weak.  If you just give the tips of your fingers in a handshake, it can be perceived as a lack of ability to engage.  And the overly enthusiastic, big “arm pump” handshake presents you as someone who is insincere or overly aggressive.  Clearly, none of these characteristics are what a hiring manager would want in a sales rep calling on doctors.  When you approach the manager, confidently, but not too firmly, grasp your interviewer's hand and make eye contact while saying hello.  Even if you think you do not have a problem in this area, ask for honest critiques from friends who aren't afraid to tell you the truth.   This is an easy one to fix, but can be the most damaging if you are unaware of the effects.

Bottom line, non-verbal communication is critical on both sides of the interviewing table.  You must know how to project a positive, friendly, and confident image using body language.  I teach my candidates everything from how to have to good eye contact to what it means if you rub your nose!  You must also know how to read the non-verbal cues from the hiring manager that will tell you whether you are on track or if you need to change your tactics.  For example, our bodies give off body language signals even before we realize what we are thinking.  If a hiring manager gives you a negative non-verbal cue, you can respond quickly and get them thinking positively about you, often even before they realize that they had a concern!  You must know what the negative non-verbal cues are so that you can respond and get back on track immediately and keep the hiring manager excited about you.  I teach all of this information and the latest training techniques in my job search tool kit “Ultimate System for Landing Your Dream Job in Pharmaceutical or Medical Sales” where I will also show you what the big pharmaceutical companies are now teaching their hiring managers about what to look for in you regarding your body language.  Most job seekers out there have no idea about this information, much less how to use it to their advantage.  Just another way I will teach you to set yourself apart from everyone else and land the job!

4 Tips on Building a Relationship With A Job Candidate

by Dan Ari

Bookmark and Share

As you are well aware of, the window of opportunity you have to get a viable candidate in for an on-site interview is less than 48 hours from the time of generating their initial interest. However, getting in touch with the hiring manager, and then getting them to commit to an interview time with your candidate is a challenge in itself.

So the question remains--how do I not lose my candidate while dealing with the small windows of time of getting them in and interviewed with the hiring manager?

Here are 4 tips of not becoming a victim of the hiring managers and the hiring process:

1. Stay proactive in the recruiting process. Immediately schedule an interview time for the candidate, even if you have had no contact with the hiring manager. Being proactive is the name of the game. Candidates should be always seeing a commitment of the hiring process moving forward. If you are unable to get the hiring manager in on their initial visit to your facility, show them around and get them connected with benefits of working at your facility.

2. Build trust with your candidate. Commit the candidate to a specific time to speak again in every conversation that takes place between the two of you. Candidates see your ability to get things done with integrity when you make commitments and live up to them. In all of my years recruiting, keeping my commitments made the biggest difference in the allegiance my candidates had in with me and the opportunities I shared with them.

3. Share insight on the managers they will be interviewing with. We all know the anxiety of meeting someone new and not knowing what to expect. When you give your candidate insight on the person they will be interviewing with, you are preparing them to feel comfortable and make their best impression during their interview. Also, let your candidate know the hot buttons for that hiring manager. These two things will not only drastically improve the number of candidates that turn in to new hires, but will create an anticipation by the candidate that will make them willing to wait a little longer to interview for the position.

4. Take the time to really get to know your candidate. There is an old saying that is holds true for star recruiters, "people don't care what you know until they know how much you care". More often than not, candidates find themselves talking to people in facilities that don't give them the time of day to explain who they are and what they are looking for in their next job. Of all my tips this ranks at the very top. This is the time to borrow an extra two ears while listening. Remember the one asking the questions is controlling the conversation, and by you controlling the conversation, you also have the opportunity to build a working relationship with your candidate before they are formally interviewed and have taken a job with your facility.

Many may say that they are already using these techniques and I am sure they are, but the question becomes how often and which of the four are being use more frequently than the others? Allow me to put a major emphasis on all four steps being important. The candidate's positive experience truly lies in your hands, as well as hiring success for your facility.

How to prepare yourself for a customer service job?

Bookmark and Share

Almost all businesses have a form of customer service job. It could be as minimum as a receptionist or as large as a dedicated call centre. The key to a customer service job is to create a positive relationship with the customers. The job of a customer care executive or manager is to ensure that the customer’s experience of the interaction with the business has been efficient.

If you are preparing yourself for a customer service job in a call centre, you must consider the process for getting the job. You first act would be to send in a resume. Your customer service resume is your first impression on the interviewer. Resumes are a key to get interview calls. If you ignore this fact, you might end up with no interview calls. Before preparing anything for your call centre job, you must ensure that your call centre resume is perfect. Ensure that you make your resume as attractive and job specific as possible. A general resume would not get you the consideration you deserve.

Second aspect is the interview questions. You will be asked a wide array of questions. These will include both standard questions and job specific questions i.e. related to customer service. Standard question like “tell me about you”, “strength and weakness” etc would be asked. You must not give general answers to these questions. Interviewers have no interest in your life. They just want to know whether you are fit for the job or not. So answer in accordance to your profile. When you apply for a customer service job at a call centre, you must say you are a social person, you like to talk to other people and listen to them, you have problem-solving skills etc.

You must also have the knowledge of your domain. Job specific questions would include: “what does good customer service mean to you?”, and “what is customer service philosophy?” etc. if you know everything but not your own function, that could be a problem. So prepare for the job related questions also.

Another aspect is the key competencies for a customer service position. You must possess these in order to make a good customer service representative. These include service orientation, patience, problem analysis, problem solving, accuracy and tolerance. Generally, an interviewer would put you in a situation to test one or more of these competencies. Remember, the interviewer is not your enemy, if he is being rude or biased, that is to understand your reaction and judge your temperament. They wish to know if you can be patient and tolerant. Do not lose your temper. That would be the end of the game.

Before you go for the interview, do some research on the company. Know the company’s products and services and their future plans. Know their competition, and other facts about the company. Pre-interview background research will help you to ask some questions to the interviewer.

To top it all, good communication skill and clear language is a key to any customer service job. If it is a call centre job you are applying for, you must remember that your customer can only hear your voice. Therefore, the interviewer would judge your communication throughout the interview process. You must listen carefully and answer precisely. Your voice must not be too loud or too low. Ensure that you speak clearly and slowly so that what you say is clearly understood.

Follow up is important for customer service. After your interview is over, send a thank you mail to the company to demonstrate your customer service orientation.

Top Guidelines on How To Influence People and Establish Rapport

by Paul Anderson

Bookmark and Share

Humans are social creatures and a lot of their lives are defined by the interaction they have with each other. This interaction is highly subject to being able to influence others to our bidding. Right from an early age we get influenced by our parents and we also learn to influence them in return. Eventually, our ability to influence others comes to shape our lives. This article explores a number of methods that helps you to influence others.

Ask Open Questions

People don’t tell you everything they have in mind. They expect encouragement and interest by the other person. You can show this by asking them open questions. Open questions, as opposed to closed questions, lead to increased information exchange and are a great way to open up a conversation. As a rule of thumb ask questions starting with the following words to get open questions: Why, When, What, Where, Who and How.

Make Clear Statements

One reason why you may fail to influence others is when they don’t understand what you wanted them to do. Hence, don’t make vague requests that are subject to misinterpretation or let the other person deliberately misunderstand them. Make a clear statement, followed by open questions to test the knowledge of the other person. Remember, the meaning of a communication is the response you get.

Think Win/Win

Don’t always think about wining on your own. Include others and think of win/win situations. You will find that is easier to get others accept your terms when there is something for them too. As the saying is, if you win too many times, no one would want to do any deal with you.

Promise a Lot, Deliver a Lot More

This is the standard practice in business dealings, earning forecasts, project outcome, etc. and for a good reason; it works. When you promise beyond someone’s expectation they become impressed and assume that there is a possibility that you won’t make it. When you break your own expectation and forecast, you will look like God. They are much more likely to believe in you and accept your wisdom in the future.

Think of What Others Need

Everyone needs something. We value things very differently and something that is valuable to a person might be nothing to you. By understanding this disparity, you can start to influence others by giving them what they want without costing you too much. Satisfying other’s needs is a great way to motivate people and influence them.

Listen Before You Talk

Much has been said about the importance of listening, but it is still not enough. Most people don’t listen and they suffer as a result. If you listen to others, you start to see the world from their point of view and you can better see their specific needs. In turn this allows you to satisfy them accordingly. A person who feels has been listened to will be more inclined to tell you about himself and share his world with you. This makes it a lot easier for you to influence him.

Show off the Benefits

Clearly state the benefits of the action you want the other person to do so they know what’s in it for them. Usually, you have thought about the request a lot more than them, especially if you have prepared for the conversation beforehand, so they are likely not to see all the benefits straight away. By bringing the benefits to their attention you increase the likelihood of influencing them.

Don’t Attack Personalities

Always focus on specific acts, task, roles and jobs, but not personalities. A generalised attack on the personality of a person or even other people produces a very different kind of conversation and generally has a negative effect on your image. If you show that you are the kind who easily attacks personalities, they can easily imagine that you may talk negatively of them behind their back. This reduces their trust in you and your ability to influence them. Hence, always talk positively of others and avoid negative gossip. This may be difficult for some people who are too used to gossiping, but there is simply no way to become a likable person if you have a reputation to talk behind everyone’s back and be the centre of gossiping in an organisation.

A great way to get people master the art of influencing is to train them on Influence Skills using training exercises and interactive scenarios in a training classroom. In addition, trainers who like to teach people influence skills can take advantage of Influence Skills Training Materials which contains slides, workbooks, course notes and exercises to quickly setup a course and teach the subject. How To Boost Your CV Writing Success For Free - Guaranteed

Today I want to give you one special tip to boosting your job hunt success. Using this tip you can dramatically increase the number of employers that book you for interview. Simply keep reading to take advantage!

The secret lies not in obsessing about your CV but in paying greater attention to the cover letter. This is because the cover letter is the first thing employer see in your application. Hence it's absolutely crucial. If the cover letter doesn't convince employers you're a worthwhile candidate then you've wasted your time sending the application.

How then can you create a really persuasive cover letter? Let them tell you first of all that doing this isn't easy. It takes hours to get the approach right and weeks to find out whether you're succeeding. But once you've got the formula down the hard work will be worth it. You'll enjoy replies from almost every employer you contact.

Start by adopting the employer's perspective. Think to yourself: What information would convince me to invite a complete stranger to interview? How would this stranger present themselves?

Remember that you're attempting to both convince the employer you're a perfect candidate but also a good human being. Employers want candidates who can both do the work and contribute to a nice atmosphere.

Once you've noted down this information start to consider the context in which employers read applications. They probably don't have time to read every cover letter in detail. In addition they've probably got dozens of applications to read through.

How then might this alter the application you send? Do you risk boring the employer by writing a detailed cover or choose something more brief?

Finally you can begin sending out the cover letter to employers. Treat each application as though it's part of an experiment. Instead of hoping and praying for a response learn from what happens. If you don't get a reply it's because you've not persuaded the employer.

Think to yourself: How might I be more persuasive? What can I change to create a better response next time? Tinker with each batch of applications and you'll soon figure out what works.
Like I say though this approach takes a long time and a lot of effort. Without paying for a professional service though it's the best chance you've got.

Are you a fresh graduate and planning to look for a job? Did you just recently quit your job and are looking for greener pastures? Are you unemployed and have little experience regarding ways to secure a job? Whatever your situation may be, it would be to your advantage to study the following tips:

Check your resume for mistakes

Before submitting your resume to a prospective employer, check your resume for corrections at least three times before handing it over. After researching about the job position, it is critical that you format your resume to match the needs of the company. For example, if you are applying for an accounting job, you should put in detail your accounting experience on your resume. Typographical and grammatical errors are serious no-no's. It is also ideal to keep the length of the resume' to at least a page and a half long.

Taking the interview challenge

A survey conducted by a staffing and consulting firm based in California which corresponded with 1,400 chief financial officers concluded that candidates for employment made most of their mistakes on their interviews. Some of the mistakes they made include: arriving late, having little knowledge about the company and the position applied for, and having a superiority complex and behaving arrogantly. The body language of the applicant must also denote that he is confident yet not overpowering. He must maintain eye contact, have a strong handshake, and avoid looking defensive by the act of crossing the arms. Wearing the right clothes is crucial for projecting a confident stance. As they say, it is better to go to an interview over-dressed than being under-dressed.

Answer questions smartly

A common mistake of interviewees is that they tend to get tense and forget the questions that are given to them, which has the effect that they are not prepared for the interview. It is important to research about the company and the position applied for to prevent being side-tracked during the interview. If you do not know the answer to the questions being asked, it is better to admit you don't know the answer to the question and add that you can research about it. Look for the skills or expertise that the company is looking for so that when interview day comes and the interviewer asks about your strengths and core competencies, you will be able to match it to what they need.

Getting the necessary referrals

Having a referral from one of the company employees can go a long way toward landing an interview. A typical company may receive job applications in the hundreds and usually 35% to 60% of all job vacancies are filled by referrals. The odds of getting hired when you have a referral are very high if you have another 200 to 500 applicants vying for the same position. If you do not know anyone from the company that may give you a referral, it is a good idea to the alumni network of your college, trade groups, social networks, and professional associations. Remember, having a referral greatly increases your chances of getting the position.

On online application

With the current trend of technology and its merging with business processes, more and more companies are now requiring prospective applicants to submit their application online. Thus, first impressions are relayed not by your first appearance but by the quality and content of your e-mail. E-mails regarding job application should be polished and well-articulated. When applying on-line, use the following tips:

Complete your sentences and do not abbreviate.

Employers do not like when you send them application letters that seem to be too casual. It is important to make a letter that is both formal and well written. This gives a good impression regarding your capabilities and skills.

Get directly to the point

When writing an application letter, you must be concise and straightforward. Do not put a story on the letter just to get the attention of the employer, chances are he or she will just get irritated with you and this only reduces your chances of getting hired.

Consider potential issues that may hinder you from getting the job

Although there are instances wherein there is a lot of need for a job but the requirements for the position may entail training programs that may bar you from getting the position due to its highly competitive nature. Some require a lot of experian even at least 3 years of work experience. Some may have no barriers to entry but the job itself may entail a very routine work flow.

Getting the job you want may be a challenge but never lose hope. It is better to wait a while and get the job that you will enjoy rather than get a job as soon as possible but ending up dissatisfied and unhappy. Make the right decision then act on it.

Most of the times it is far more than easy to answer the question " What would you like to do for a living ? " And most of the times the answer is "How should I know? " There are only a few people extremely lucky knowing what the want to do with their lives.

If you’re not sure what to do, here’s a list that might help.

1. Know thyself.

Identify what really interests and excites you. Understand that these traits define you and use it to explore career choices and opportunities. Here is where you have to put a lot of thought. Most of the times it is far more than easy to answer the question " What would you like to do for a living ? " Most of the times it takes decades to identify who we really are. Doing something now later you might descover that you hated it or vice versa. Or maybe there is something out there that if you do it you would really love it. Try as many different things as you can. Is there a possible way to try every single legal job on the planet? Then do it. You might be really good in something but you hate it or you might not be good at all in something else but you really love it. Take advantage of both situations. Use all your abilities or try to descover what abilities are sleeping inside you. It is really hard to identify your self and it takes a lot of time.

2. Take a career assessment test.

There are a lot of career assessment tests available online. Find the time to take one. The test gives you a lot of insights about your core competencies and work preferences. But be careful because those tests are making your personal profile based on some generic questions that were not designed to get to know you as a person. A lot of factors are not included and the result will not be 100% correct. There is no possible way a couple of dozens of questions to figure out who you really are and what you really want. All I am saying is do the test but do not feel restrained to the test's results.

3. Ask others.

It’s actually quite difficult to see yourself as others do. It would be to your advantage to ask friends and family on your traits and skills. Your co-workers are also a good source of information. Knowing how they perceive you, what they like and don’t like about you and what skills or traits need to be changed can be helpful in determining your professional profile.

4. What moves you?

Would you be more interested in status or a six figure salary? Or both? Do you want to make a difference in your community and the world or just on your company’s net worth? What makes you to want to wake up in the morning and go to work?

5. Take charge.

In the ‘80s, when you worked for a large company, you usually could conclude that you would be working there for your entire career. In those days, the corporation drove your career path, advancing as it saw fit.

At the turn of the century, times have changed. In the span of your career, you would probably work for at least five companies. In most cases, you will probably work for more than five. Know which career track you desire, and make sure that track brings you to where you wish to go.

6. Determine the company fit.

With the current emphasis on streamlined and productivity-focused companies, the cultural and company fit are just as important as the professional goals. Consider the values and principles of the company and compare them with your own. It is important that you feel comfortable and fit in with company.

7. Free your mind.

The career path you choose is about change and more change. It includes expansion and new opportunities. All of these changes require a desire to journey and discover, well most of the times not literally.

8. Balance is the key.

A huge amount of time is devoted to your career when you are in your 20s and 30s. When you reach your 40s, your personal life might took a hit and you forgot how important is to you. Find a corporation that will provide you with a balance in your work and your life.

9. Don’t hang around.

If you’re not satisfied with the way your career is going, go do something. Always be in control of your career path to have a satisfying career. Do not fall in the trap staying somewhere because you are feeling secure even if you hate. If it is not for you then change it. Remember we only live once and we will spend our lives working so you don't want to spend the rest of your life doing something that you hate.

What To Wear For A Job Interview

by Jack Doe

Bookmark and Share

Prepare and practice for an interview. After the date and venue has been set, allow time for enough preparation for the big day. Remember that first impressions do last, so the way an applicant look really does matter. Employers could easily give the verdict based on the manner of dressing during the initial interview.

Better questions and service can be received if the appearance itself commands respect. It is important to consider the surroundings of the company granting you an interview. There is no reason to be over dressed or poorly dressed during this very significant day. In fact, it is a good rule of thumb to always dress appropriately for any situation. All to often appearance is glossed over. Some might say that the inner characteristics of the person matter more, but in reality, you only have one opportunity for a first impression. Make it count!

Although there are specific guidelines that can be followed, these does not apply to all states like New York for example, where people wear trendy up to extreme styles that are far away from the usual fashion rules common people know. The rule of thumb should be to wear something that could boost more confidence.

Below are the top ten do's and don'ts during an interview:

1. Avoid wild colored nail polish before the interview. The same goes with long nails that could easily turn off some conservative employers. These should be neat and very tidy looking.

2. Never wear jewelry that rattles and jiggles as you speak and move. Try not to wear two or more rings or earrings. Piercing aside from the ears is also a no.

3. Professional hairdo also counts

4. If you are a woman, wear closed shoes. Heels are very appropriate as this gives more confidence to an individual and sense of respect is also provided once they see the person wearing them.

5. Again, for the ladies, never bare those newly shaven legs. If possible, use stockings regardless of the temperature. But make sure not to use fancy colored ones. Only use those made for neutral looking legs. These should also match the shoes.

6. Remember that a good suit or dress brings more confidence as well. This will also allow more comfort and chance for the applicant to answer comfortably or with ease.

7. Avoid short skirts for women. Wearing pants or leggings are a no, no during interviews.

8. Wear the appropriate blazers just as long as they do not look fashion outdated. Do not use any leather coats or jackets.

9. For men, the tie is still appropriate. Avoid using turtlenecks. If there is no suit and tie available, use a collared shirt or white long sleeves.

10. Men must not use too much aftershave.

11. Women should be using bags that are not too bright and conspicuous. These should be conservative and matching the dress.

12. Any briefcase used must be in perfect condition.

The way a person looks equal the message he is trying to convey. During the interview, this can either become a plus factor for the applicant or big loss. Know for a fact that the way an applicant should look must be appealing, fashionable but not loud.

Consider the latest trends in the area or location where the prospective job is located. One aspect that is a part of how employer picks a new hire is based on the physical attributes of the applicant. From the way the hands were shaken, keeping an eye contact, the way the posture was maintained, the smile was delivered up to the manner of dressing is being rated already.

Regardless of your personal career background, skills, and underlying talents, if the first impression was never striking enough to make an outstanding appeal to the interviewers, nothing else counts. This can be the potential employers’ initial interpretation of how an applicant will do on the job.

Whether that perception is “fair” is irrelevant. Do you want the job or not ? Then do the things right and your chances for success are much greater!

Carbon and hydrogen are present in lipids and petroleum and so they are chemically same. The primary problem with utilizing biological lipids as fuels is the reality that lipids are a lot more viscous (or resistant to "flowing," in layman's terms) than the refined petrochemicals which make up gasoline, diesel fuel, kerosene, and other petroleum-based fuels. As a result, unrefined lipids will not be totally burned off in an motor, and leftover product which did not burn can accumulate in the motor.

Leadership is defined as a process of "social influence in which one person can enlist the aid and support of others in the accomplishment of a common task." Simply put, leadership is all about motivating people to contribute so that something extraordinary can be achieved.Every well respected organization wants to be better and do more and do it more profitably - while at the same time helping its employees be more fulfilled as individuals and well as team members. Employees will be happier and the company will be more profitable as a result of management leadership training courses that address their core needs. When you've got a person that is new to management and leadership, a basic or introductory course might be best. Some of the basics of leadership would be general interpersonal communication, knowing behaviors, making decisions and problem solving, goal setting, effective time management, and conflict resolution.

The next part then would be for you to identify the components of this training course. First and foremost, you should include a juxtaposition of servanthood and leadership. How are they different? How does our culture look at people who are in positions of leadership? How does it see the servants? Is it similar to how the 'untouchables' are treated in a primitive Indian society? If you are thinking of taking a program that teaches leadership skills, ask yourself whether you have some makings of a leader in you already. Sometimes you may not be very aware of your own leadership traits but your friends, colleagues, or superiors may have recognized them in you.Selecting the right leadership development training is important to the success of your business and the individual being trained.A management course in Egypt must school you in the arts of time and priority management. Time is the most important and precious resource of them all, so the skill to manage time is of colossal importance to any businessman. And since time is always limited, having the skill to prioritize your objectives is a must. A good management course in Egypt will really help you in this area.

For those wanting to become a manager, the above options may not be viable. Firstly, they may have to pay for the courses themselves as companies are often reluctant to fund education if the person isn't already in a management position. Secondly, they may not have the time to commit to study when they're at the stage of trying to get their first team leader, manager or supervisor role.Problem solving is very important in management and learning how to do that is necessary. With training you'll learn to collaborate with others and delegate jobs. You'll also learn ways to handle complaints that come up and even how to mentor and encourage your workers to keep them motivated into doing a good job.
